The 3-Step Activity Guide To Confident Public Speaking
When we begin our journey to become a confident public
speaker, it is extremely important to have a structured plan in place. This can
be achieved by enrolling in a reputed
public speaking course and develop your own set of activities to work
towards your goals. The following 4-step activities are recommended to
transform yourself into a successful public speaker. Work on them diligently!
1. Develop a Public Speaking Portfolio
First of all, you need to develop a portfolio to document
your journey as a public speaker. Purchase a notebook to articulate your
communication goals for the next few months. This should include:
- Speech topics and outlines
- Instructor evaluations
- Self and peer critiques for every speech
- Written assignments
2. Interview a High-Ranking Professional
Set up an interview with a managing director or any
high-ranking professional within your community. Ensure you have a robust
networking profile so that you are easily referred to the desired person. Now,
these are the questions you should pose to the director:
- What does his company look for in job applicants?
- How important is oral communication for the different job profiles in their company, as compared to technical skills and academic achievements?
- What is the key thing that the company looks for in the resume/cover letter?
3. Communication Process Analysis
Communicate regularly with your friends and family in
English. Analyze the conversations, take feedback, and write down your
experience in your journal. Ask yourself the following questions:
- Was my body language appropriate?
- Was my tone and voice modulation correct?
- Was I getting distracted by any internal or external sources? If yes, then identify them.
- Was I taking the right pauses? Was there a hum while I was speaking?
- Was the ultimate objective of shared message
creation achieved?
Remember, these three activities have to be done apart from the usual exercises you get at your institute. A combination of good guidance, effective activities, and consistent hard work will ensure you become a fluent English speaker in a short period of time.
